Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada has teamed-up with Volunteers of America to bring a Girl Scout troop to girls living in Reno ’s Family Shelter and are looking for more volunteers to assist. The program, held each Thursday from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., gives all girls who desire to be a Girl Scout, access to scouting as well as the benefits that come along with the lessons, events and activities.
In the Family Shelter troop, girls have the ability to decide what activities they would like to participate in. Activities chosen by the girls include origami, playing games, learning about social etiquette and manners and writing and illustrating their very own hardbound storybook.
"It is extremely important for the girls living in the Family Shelter to belong to Girl Scouts where, in a safe place, they can be a part of a supportive organization, learn about self esteem, experience things they normally wouldn’t have the chance to experience and to connect with the world around them," said Carol Merideth, membership specialist for Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada.
