GSSN Kicks-Off Cookie Season With A Bang!

Girl Scouts from all over our council helped kick-off the 2011 cookie season on Saturday, January 8, 2011. Over 1,000 people came to the second annual Cookie Kick-Off Carnival and had a great time! There was face painting, magicians, carnival games and, for those who got their cookie passport stamped, a new 2011 cookie pin! All in all a great time was had and a lot of energy was in the air. If the excitement felt at the Cookie Kick-Off was any indicator, we are going to have a great cookie sale this year! Thanks to everyone who participated!

Fallon Girl Scout Completes Her Gold Award Project!

Veterans Day has been a special holiday set aside for those to thank servicemen and women for the sacrifices they make to keep the United States secure.

On Thursday, however, veterans were instead thanking Churchill County High School senior Natalie Reavy, whose project to honor those who have served their country from the Revolutionary War to the present wars in Iraq and Afghanistan was on display at the Fallon Convention Center.

Reavy's project originated as part of the Girl Scout Gold Award, the equivalent to an Eagle Scout award. She wanted to assemble a project that paid homage to veterans.

Several hundred people including retired and current veterans attended the presentation, a turnout that surprised Reavy.

“I am very pleased with the turnout,” Reavy said after talking to several well-wishers from the Veterans of Foreign Wars Lawton-Silva Chapter 1002 Ladies Auxiliary.

The hard work paid off for Reavy. With the help of people from her church and several service organizations, she assembled various displays that told the veterans' story. She hopes the project will be the start of something special on Veterans Day.

Reavy, who wants to study medicine at the University of Nevada next year, said she hopes her fellow Girl Scouts continue this project next year.

While many of the displays informed attendees of the veterans and their service, a video presentation, “Salute to the Red, White and Blue,” was shown in an adjacent room. The video included music and interview with well-known celebrities.

“This is incredible. The information is mind-boggling,” said Connie Berrier, a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. “We're going to invite her to speak at the Ladies Auxiliary about her project.”

Barbara Eaton, another member of the Ladies Auxiliary, agreed.

“I would like to see this project go statewide, especially with the VFW,” she said.

Lance McNeil, commander of the American Legion Post 16 in Fallon, said Reavy did an excellent job in portraying veterans during both peacetime and in war. McNeil said he enjoyed the Victory Europe display and the telegram sent to a woman advising her of a missing son.

“Very good, very impressed for someone her age to do this,” McNeil said.

As he was standing near the display, a little girl walked up to McNeil, tugged at his pant leg and thanked him. McNeil was moved.

“Kids very young respect those who are veterans,” he said.

Gordy Coleman of Fallon retired from the Navy four years ago after a 34-year career. He was one of the first to thank Reavy for her project.

“I was drawn to this event by the newspaper coverage of this girl's efforts,” he said. “It's an honor to support her. I assured her every person who wears a uniform would be proud of her efforts.”

After reading one of the posters on veterans, Mayor Ken Tedford Jr. said Reavy “did a very nice job on an important day.”

“Veterans don't get enough recognition,” Tedford said, adding that displays like Reavy's need to pass from generation to generation. “It's important to pass it on.”

When Reavy first came up with the idea, she contacted Mike Mader from the Nevada Office of Veterans Service. Mader, a Fallon resident who has been with the agency for 15 years, said Reavy's display is definitely a Gold Award project.
“I am pleased with the crowd. When I pulled up, I couldn't believe all the cars that were here,” said Mader, a veteran himself who spent 20 years in the Navy, retiring in 1988. “For her to do this (the project) is impressive, and this is one of the reasons I live in Fallon. We need more events like this here.”

How about viewing the universe up close and personal with the whole family?! As a part of the Exploring the Universe Series, GSSN is hosting a FREE Star Party and everyone is invited!

You will be able to view the night sky through a variety of telescopes while teaming up with astronomers to learn about all of the different celestial bodies like the moon, planets and constellations!

The Family Star Party will be held at Western Nevada College in Carson City this Saturday, October 9, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Dayton Girl Scouts Make a Difference at Carson River Clean Up!

On Saturday, September 18, eight girls from Dayton Troop 152 participated in the Carson River Clean Up sponsored by the Bureau of Land Management and the Carson City Kiwanis. These eight Juniors and Cadettes worked alongside many other community volunteers cleaning up litter along the river as well as assisted an adult leader with putting out an abandoned campfire. For their quick action, these girls will be honored at the Comstock Service Unit's Investiture Ceremony on November 15. These Girl Scouts worked hard in the rising temperatures.and learned a lot about the negative impact people are having on their environment and what they can do to help make the world a better place.

GSSN Brings Girl Scouting Experience to Girls Living in Shelter

Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada has teamed-up with Volunteers of America to bring a Girl Scout troop to girls living in Reno’s Family Shelter and are looking for more volunteers to assist. The program, held each Thursday from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., gives all girls who desire to be a Girl Scout, access to scouting as well as the benefits that come along with the lessons, events and activities.

In the Family Shelter troop, girls have the ability to decide what activities they would like to participate in. Activities chosen by the girls include origami, playing games, learning about social etiquette and manners and writing and illustrating their very own hardbound storybook.

"It is extremely important for the girls living in the Family Shelter to belong to Girl Scouts where, in a safe place, they can be a part of a supportive organization, learn about self esteem, experience things they normally wouldn’t have the chance to experience and to connect with the world around them," said Carol Merideth, membership specialist for Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada.

Whether girls are into team or individual sports, dance, cheerleading, acting or modeling, one thing is for sure, girls of all ages and skill levels will improve their fundamental athletic skills such as speed, strength, agility and endurance while also building overall confidence, self esteem, creative energies and communication skills at this energizing event!

Girls who attend will be able to sign up for classes, workshops and stations scheduled throughout the day such as sand volleyball, walleyball, aquatics exercise, martial arts, body jam dancing, aerobic fitness, yoga, image consulting and acting and modeling basics. Sample green smoothies and make a fresh batch of healthy trail mix. Activities will be led by our co-sponsors, the Double Diamond Athletic Club and Take 2 Performers Studio. Hispanic Heritage Month is the perfect time for girls of all backgrounds to come together to discover, connect and celebrate the Hispanic culture.

Today more than 48 million people in the United States are of Hispanic origin, 338,900 of whom are young Latinas who proudly call themselves Girl Scouts. Through Girl Scouts, girls can not only earn patches for learning more about Hispanic heritage, they can also hold Quinceañera celebrations, attend leadership development training and build the confidence and self-esteem to become the leaders of tomorrow.

We're looking for senior Girl Scout leaders who want to volunteer at this year's Nevada State Fair Aug. 25-29 at the Reno Livestock Events Center. Staff the carnival gate, serve lunch, handout programs, etc. and earn $300-$500 for your troop! Volunteers not only get to be part of this exciting Wild West event, but will also receive free water and refreshments, free admission to any day of the fair, an unlimited ride wristband, a free meal for working more than six hours and get to spend time with fellow troop members while earning money to fund their group goals!

Our Fall Kickoff Event, GIRL SCOUT GREEN AND PROUD OF IT!, welcomes service team members, trainers and key volunteers at 9 a.m. at the Parasol Collaboration Foundation building (948 Incline Way) in Incline Village, NV.

Girl Scouts Celebrates Real Women in the Media

How do you think women's bodies are represented in the media? Girls are constantly innundated with images of thin, seeminly flawless women on bilboards, the internet, in TV shows and magazine covers. We know that these public portrayals of women are not realistic yet such images have contributed to the alarming fact that nearly one-third of 1,000 girls polled said they have used drastic methods such as starving themselves to lose weight and 37 percent know someone their age with an eating disorder. According to the Girl Scout Research Institute, almost 90 percent of the 1,000 girls polled, aged 13 to 17, thought the fashion industry and media placed too much emphasis on being thin. So what can we do about it? The Girl Scouts of America is taking a positive step and celebrating realistic women with a new public service announcment that promotes self-esteem in young girls. Moreover, the Girl Scouts of America is combining forces with the Dove Self-Esteem Fund in order to create self-esteem boosting programs that focus on leadership and body issues projected by the media.

Super Cool! Girl Chat Online with Ramona and Beezus Stars!

Girl Scouts of the USA invites all Girl Scouts and their friends to join a live online chat with actors Joey King and Selena Gomez, stars of the upcoming movie, Ramona and Beezus, debuting in theaters July 23!

Girls from Troop 152 in Dayton Participate In Golden Gate Bridging Ceremony!

Girls Scouts from Troop 152 in Dayton will be joining more than 5,300 girls from six states at the annual west coast Girl Scout tradition, Golden Gate Bridging.

Troop 152 will ceremoniously cross the Golden Gate Bridge on Saturday, May 8 in a day-long event in San Francisco’s Presidio. Bridging is a traditional Girl Scout celebration of accomplishments where girls make the transition from the younger girl to the older girl program.

Participating in bridging, on one of the most famous and beautiful bridges in the world, makes the bridging process even more special for Troop 152. These girls have been planning to attend Golden Gate Bridging for nine months.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our troop,” said troop Natasha Smihula, troop leader. “Our girls have worked so hard, and our journey across the bridge will be extremely meaningful as we take in the natural beauty of the ocean, the mountains and the bay with thousands of other girls.”

“I am getting so excited for San Francisco,” said troop member, Alexandra Anthis. “This will be so much fun and then we get to be Cadettes!”

Olivia Smihula, another bridging member of Troop 152, says, “I am nervous to walk across the Golden Gate Bridge but Girl Scouts is all about courage!”

The celebration includes not only crossing the bridge but a full day of fun in the Presidio. More than 50 vendor booths will host activities including music and dancing, crafts, karaoke booths, games, and kite flying. Participating organizations include American Red Cross, American Heart Association, The San Francisco Zoo, United Studios of Self-Defense, NASA Ames Space Cookies, San Francisco Giants, California Academy of Science, the SJ Tech Museum and more.
